Minnesota Commissioner of Education

On Jan. 15, 1999, Gov. Jesse Ventura appointed Jax to the post of Commissioner of Education and CEO of the Department of Education for the State of Minnesota.

During her tenure, Minnesota's state education agency slashed its budget by $8.5 million (more than 10 percent) and, as a result, Jax "cut one-quarter of the department's staff to 183 positions and restricted agency spending on travel, hiring, and contracting." Also, during her term as commissioner, state math and reading scores increased and a system for publicly reporting student data was created.

Jax was instrumental in settling a lawsuit between the NAACP and the state before her term as commissioner ended in 2003.
